A recent development in Russia has seen a court imposing fines on technology giant Apple and the Wikimedia Foundation, the host of Wikipedia. The fines stem from their failure to remove content labeled as “false information” concerning Russia’s military activities in Ukraine.
The ruling was made by a justice of the peace in a magistrates’ court, which handles minor criminal cases and administrative violations. The Wikimedia Foundation has been fined three million roubles (£25,000) for retaining content on Russian-language Wikipedia pages that allegedly violated a law against discrediting Russia’s military and spreading misinformation about the Ukraine conflict. Apple, on the other hand, was found guilty of not removing podcasts and apps containing such information and was fined 400,000 roubles (£3,360).
