In a quest for sustainable water sources in drought-stricken rural areas of the Arica and Parinacota region, researchers have initiated a pilot project to capture water from “camanchaca,” a unique coastal fog prevalent in the far north of Chile. This endeavor aims to alleviate water scarcity by utilizing this natural phenomenon to benefit communities facing water shortages.
The project, titled “Social Technological Transfer Based on Fog Water Collection for Underserved Areas: A Fog Collection Pilot,” spearheaded by archaeologist Calogero Santoro Vargas from the Institute of High Research at the University of Tarapacá, focuses on extracting water from the camanchaca fog along the coasts of Arica and Parinacota.
